AUTUMN MIGRATION & SUPERIOR ECOLOGY SERIES
August 23 - October 26, 2008
Exploring the Dynamic Fall Season on Lake Superior's North Shore
Welcome to the Autumn Migration & Superior Ecology Series!! For 2008, the Series truly offers a season filled with exploration and hands-on discovery - the North Shore & Boreal Forest - spectacular scenery, varied habitats, ancient rocks, and a wealth of bird species - the perfect setting for explorers of all abilities to enjoy high-quality field experiences immersed in the northern landscape.
The new "Series" format of the former "Autumn Birding Migration" event is the direct result of the forward-thinking requests of participants and leaders. The universal vision: an event that accesses the breadth and richness of the entire bird migratory season in the North. The creative talents of North House's team of guides and instructors brought the idea to life. The Series consists of over fifteen inter-related, field-focused workshops and courses.
Late summer and autumn on Lake Superior has historically offered dynamic birding opportunities - the best chance for sought-after regular species, plus a dazzling array of rarities. From mid-August to late October, fall weather patterns combined with Lake Superior's immense size create a natural funneling route for migrating birds. Birds naturally follow the lake's shoreline, rather than crossing the water. Many birds stop to feed - and provide a unique chance for birders to spot these birds in migration.
Past late summer and autumn highlights include neo-tropic warblers, Sage Thrasher, Long-eared Owl, Townsend's Solitaire, Black-backed Woodpecker Three-toed, Boreal Chickadee, Surf Scoter, White-winged Scoter, Black Scoter, Pacific Loon, White-winged Crossbill, Red Crossbill, Pine Grosbeak, Evening Grosbeak, Redpoll, Common Loon, Long-tailed Duck, Common Merganser, Red-breasted Merganser, Hooded Merganser, Harlequin Duck, Horned Grebe, Red-necked Grebe, Iceland Gull, and other "great finds".
