11TH ANNUAL SPRING BOREAL BIRDING & NORTHERN LANDSCAPES FESTIVAL
June 5 - 8, 2008
Magnet On The Shore - Birding Intro Workshop
Instructors: Jerry Bonkoski, John Hockema
Session Options:

Each spring the North Shore comes alive with bird migration. With fieldwork in the Grand MaraisHarbor area and a classroom session, we'll review basic field skills including use of binoculars, current birding field guides and an introduction to birding by ear. Our goal is finding, identifying and discussing approximately 65 species of birds - both resident and migrating birds. This course is part of the Boreal Birding and Northern Landscapes Festival - enrollment includes participation in the festival's Friday and Saturday evening programs.
A series of parallel course offerings are also featured during both the spring and fall festivals. Participation in this course includes the festivals' featured evening programs (plus evening desserts!) on Friday and Saturday evenings at 7pm. Materials fee covers course supplies and morning refreshments for festival participants.

Instructor Profile
Jerry Bonkoski - Prior Lake, MN
Jerry's interest in birds began when he observed a Horned Lark in his yard at Byron, Minnesota in the 1970s. Since then he has become an avid bird watcher, investing time and energy finding birds throughout Minnesota. An active member of the Bluebird Recovery Committee in southeastern Minnesota, he has built thousands and monitored hundreds of nesting boxes. Jerry is a past President of the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union. Recently, he has worked with Bob Janssen on the Minnesota DNR project to develop up-to-date bird species lists for each state park. Jerry retired from a career in computers in 2002.
John Hockema - Rochester, MN
John started birding in 1984 working with his mentor, Dr. Risser, to whom he was introduced by his grandmother. Since then, he has traveled across the state of Minnesota chasing birds. On June 11, 2004, John became the third earliest ever to record 300 species of birds in one year in Minnesota, finding his 300th, a Least Bittern, near Marshall, MN. He has been doing big years in Minnesota since 1998, but vows to give them up to avoid bankruptcy. Sharing his enthusiasm for birding takes many forms including serving as a guide/instructor for spring and fall bird festivals at North House.
