Irish Breads - A Wee Taste of Irish Soda Bread, Barm Brack and Oat Farls
This is an opportunity to try your hand at making some traditional Irish breads. As a group we'll use buttermilk and baking soda as the leavening for our Soda Bread and Oat & Barley Farls and cook them the traditional way - on a hot griddle. We'll answer the question "What are farls, and are they really there to let the fairies out?" Barm Brack is our only yeasted bread of the session. We'll make it "speckled bread" when we add currants to the dough. At the end of the session we'll sit down together to enjoy our creations with butter, jam and a cup of hot tea. This Irish themed course is a part of a series of Celtic traditions explored throughout the weekend. A highlight of the weekend includes a musical performance and series of workshops by the Irish trio, Chulrua.
