Step 1 - Lofting For Boatbuilders

Learn the essential first step in boatbuilding as we take the mystery out of lofting. Lofting is the process of putting down the lines of a boat in two dimensions. This is the only way to render accurate full-size stations of a boat you aspire to build. While lofting can seem quite mystifying from readings, it is actually a fairly simple and straightforward process best learned by doing. In the class, we will loft a full size round-bottomed classic wooden boat from a table of offsets, setting out the half-breadth view and the profile view used to develop the body plan. If time allows we will draw the body plan for the station molds. We will also "develop" the transom to its actual size from these views. We will cover how to use the lofting to determine and transfer angles at the transom, keel and stem - quite useful exercises to learn when you proceed to building the boat.

This class is designed to de-mystify the process of lofting - the process of laying down the lines necessary to develop full scale drawings of a boat. As a class project, we will loft a classic wooden boat from a table of offsets.
