Breeding Bird Atlas Project (Service Learning)

Did you ever wish you were a Citizen Scientist? This may be your big chance! Participants in this Service Learning session will be part of the Minnesota Breeding Bird Atlas project. Started in 2009, the MNBBA is a five-year effort that will survey blocks throughout the state for breeding status of the region’s bird species. Datasets gathered by the project will be used on a state-wide and national level, generating range maps and an atlas of Minnesota breeding birds. Learning about the data-collecting protocols and preparing with maps and information about the survey area is the first step. Time in the field will be led by experienced birders on pre-scouted routes to defined Cook County priority blocks. Individuals unable to stay for the second day are invited to only be part of the first day of the session.

Field time for this project will emphasize in-depth observation of birds in each survey area. Participants will follow birds to confirm evidence of breeding; from carrying nest material, vocalizations, or other indications to searching out nests. Carpooling will be utilized to reach selected field sites, and radios will be used in the field for communication. Visit the Minnesota Breeding Bird Atlas project web site to learn more. Individuals interested in the atlas project may want to assist in future years as well.
