Blacksmithing Joinery Techniques

This class will challenge students in the skill of using traditional joinery techniques to build a pair of decorative shelf brackets or an ornate sign bracket. We will create a frame using upset square corners and the structural bracing will include a variety of ornamental scrollwork and twists- all parts joined using mortise and tenon, forge welding, collars, or rivets. Along with proper fire maintenance, techniques learned will include punching holes, drawing out, tapering, upsetting, and forging scrolls over the anvil. The skills covered in this course are critical for those interested in historic and period work, and can be applied to railings, gates, lighting, and other architectural ironwork. This class is appropriate for beginning and intermediate smiths as we will adapt projects to suit your skill level.
