Nils Larsen

Nils Larsen grew up in Hawaii, and lacking snow and winter during those formative years, has been trying to fill that hole ever since. To those ends, Nils has been an avid backcountry skier since the early 1970's. He has taught free heel and backcountry skiing since 1981, and has shot and produced three videos focusing on skiing in the backcountry. He works as a consultant in the ski industry as well as teaching, guiding, and skiing whenever he can. He lives in mountains of NE Washington. Nils became interested in the skiing traditions of Northern Asia in 2004 when he saw a few pictures of Altai locals and their skis, taken on the first western ski expedition into the Chinese Altai. He has been researching the roots of skiing and documenting the remnant use of traditional skis ever since.
