Ground Breaking. In late September 2011 North House did just that, transforming campus' asphalt parking lot into a revitalized Outdoor Student Commons, a main campus entry and an expanded upper parking area. The vision: a harbor-side campus that inspires students, embraces community, enables programs and improves Lake Superior's water quality.

Ground Breaking. In fourteen short years North House has done just that, shaping a program and a campus that celebrates the North, inspires students and gathers community. Who will help North House break new ground for the Commons? We need ALL of our friends and donors to be involved. The overall project budget is $250,000-$270,000. Well over half of this budget is already secured, including a $90,000 grant from Minnesota’s Lake Superior Coastal Program that must be fully matched. Matching the $90,000 grant will only happen when generous and purposeful donors step forward. The vision is clear - the need is now - PLEASE get involved. We welcome your questions and have more information to share by mail or in person

Progress on the commons began in late September. The old asphalt parking lot was removed to make way for a better community space.

The centerpiece of the commons is a compass rose. Here, a cardinal point (covered in a protective film) is placed into newly poured concrete.

Paving bricks on each end of campus will help create clean runoff into Lake Superior

The newly moved blacksmith's shop is prepared to be set in place on its footings.

Peter Henrikson and Matthew Brown work on fitting the timbers into their new footings.

Dec 2010, the final SIP panel is put up on the structure, making it fully enclosed. (Well, aside from doors and windows, which are coming soon!)

OVERVIEW
Raise The Roof: Campaign For North House Folk School is a major, multi-year commitment designed to secure and enhance North House’s rich educational potential.

North House has emerged as a truly unique and essential northern resource. Our commitment to learning as a lifetime endeavor, our passion for the North and its story, our focus on nurturing community, our hunger for engaging life through the work of our hands – each has found its place here.

The Raise The Roof vision has taken shape over a series of years. At its heart are three fundamental commitments:

Home, Harbor
Within the North House community there is an unwavering sense that our home is on the Grand Marais Harbor. It is from this place that our dreams will be launched and realized.

Quality, Safety, Community
For the North House mission to achieve its educational potential, our entire campus must project our commitment to quality, safety and community.

Stability, Strength
As an emerging nonprofit, North House’s ability to achieve its mission and capacity to welcome a diversity of students is directly connected to our financial capabilities. Therefore, increasing annual giving and expanding our endowment is essential.

The symbolism of the title fits North House perfectly– it is the hands of many that will raise the roof. We welcome your questions and look forward to your involvement.
