Summer Programs at North House

Summer is here at North House, with sailing, craft demonstrations, mini courses, and more. Stop by campus this summer for a taste of traditional craft and life on the Grand Marais Harbor!

Posted on May 25, 2023

Whether you're here for a week or a day, North House Folk School has activities throughout the summer. Sail Lake Superior, bake in a wood-fired oven, or view crafts made by our talented artisan instructors.

Daily Sailing

The flagship of the Grand Marais Harbor, Hjørdis shares the name of the mythical Norse goddess of war. Take a trip on this 50’ traditionally-rigged steel schooner and gain access to both the largest lake in the world and to experience Grand Marais as it was approached in the centuries before Highway 61 — from the water.

Sail sare approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes and can be booked online up to one hour before the scheduled sail. Beyond that, call North House for availability.

Wood-Fired Baking Mini Course

Thursdays from June 22-August 24; 1-3pm and 4:30-6:30pm

Experience the delight of baking in our outdoor wood-fired oven! In this two-hour course, students will be introduced to baking bread and using a wood fired oven. Each student will get to bake carta di musica (thin wafer bread) and focaccia while exploring the history and science of bread baking.

You can register for available sessions online up to 1 hour before the start time, but classes generally fill up before then. Learn more and book here

Instructors in Residence

Weekends from May 25-September 14; typically Thursday-Sunday, 10am-4pm

Stop by our outdoor commons in the center of campus each week to see live traditional craft demonstrations with our talented artisan instructors. Each week a different instructor will be featured and visitors will have the opportunity to observe their hands at work as well as ask questions about the craft. Find the full schedule here

Live Craft

Catch our Craft Education Interns on the commons throughout the summer as they demo crafts they are exploring. Various Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

Family Drop-in Crafts

On select weekends in the summer, North House will be having drop-in crafts for people of all ages. Drop-in crafts will take place on one day during the weekends of May 26, June 30, and July 14 between noon and 4pm. Exact days are subject to change depending on the weather. Follow the North House Facebook page for updates as each weekend gets closer.
