Course Overview

Head out on the lake, into the woods, or to the grocery store in style and function with a custom handmade backpack. In this beginner-friendly class we will cover all of the basics including fabrics and notions, industrial sewing techniques, and design. Students will spend the first day learning, honing, and mastering different aspects of backpack production at stations set up in the classroom covering sewing straight and zig zag stitches, binding, overlap and flat felled seams, leather cutting and riveting, hot cutting synthetics, and pocket insertions creating a little stuff sack. Over the next two days, we will design, layout, and assemble the backpacks using the various stations and machines at a relaxed pace. The size and proportion of the final bag will be up to the student as will the use of leather or poly straps and the appropriate notions after practicing on both on the first day. Students can also work on another stuff sack if they choose if there is extra time.
