Course Overview

Learn how to build an elegant clamshell portfolio box, suitable for the presentation and storage of photographs, prints, books, or drawings. These cases are elegant and practical, and the interlocking tray reduces exposure to light and dust.

This container, also known as a Solander box, was named after botanist Dr. Daniel Solander, who sailed aboard the Endeavour to the Pacific Ocean with Captain Cook. He designed this protective box, still in common use in libraries and archives, while cataloging the natural history collections of the British Museum.

Students will learn how to accurately measure, cut materials, and build their own clamshell case to take home. All materials will be supplied and pre-cut to size prior to the start of class although recommended equipment, choice of book cloths, papers, and the different adhesives and their uses will be discussed for those students who wish to continue constructing cases on their own time.
