Introduction to Tablet Weaving

Course Overview

Tablet weaving (also called card weaving) is an ancient craft found in many places around the world. This type of weaving produces strong bands which have many historical uses, such as belts, straps, horse reins, and decorative trims for clothing.

This three day course is a hands-on intensive intro to tablet weaving, open to both absolute beginners and those who have some tablet weaving experience. Throughout the course you will have the opportunity to weave two bands, one with a simple pattern of turning the cards, and another with a more intricate turning pattern. The length of band is flexible for each student, but the course goal is to weave at least one long band (suitable for a belt or strap).

In this course, you will receive your own set of cards and a little book on tablet weaving. You will experiment with weaving with a tablet loom and without. By the end of the course you should have a thorough understanding of the basic art of tablet weaving, be able to read/design patterns, and be able to independently set up your own tablets for future bands.

Students age 12+ may sign up for this course independently. Youth ages 8 and up may attend if accompanied by an adult. Adult/child pairs will complete one project and pay one materials fee.
