Woodworking & Furniturecraft

Japanese Woodworking Introduction

Course Overview

This one-day course offers a unique opportunity to spend time with Shuji Nakagawa, a third generation Japanese cooper and woodworker. Mr. Nakagawa will demonstrate parts of the coopering process, share and discuss a variety of specialized Japanese hand tools, and lead students in a simple project inspired by the Japanese woodworking tradition, such as chopsticks or cutting boards. This short course is a chance for those who are interested in learning from someone working at the highest levels in his field, but are not ready to take on a longer project or have limited or no woodworking experience. The emphasis is on discussion and learning, not on a finished product. The course and discussion will be offered in Japanese, with translation. The materials fee will be due to North House during class (varies, $25 and up).
