Course Overview

Signing a piece of work gives it authenticity and acknowledges that you fully stand behind it. But what about the signature itself? The stamp? The chop? With the tools of relief printmaking, this class will explore the distillation process of refining a printable symbol that best identifies you as an individual. What would your hand-carved logo look like? How would you identify yourself in the fewest possible strokes? Drawing from iconography such as crests, bookplates, letter seals, log marks, ranch brands, and more, we will work on fine tuning an image that “speaks for itself” and best describes what you do. Methods for transferring, carving, registration, and printing will be introduced. Participants will be shown reductive and multiple block woodcut relief printmaking techniques. We will print by hand with various colors on paper and fabric, creating a printed image that can be used as an emblem on clothing, patches, banners, bags, flags, and more.
