Felting: Seamless Mittens and More

Wool has the amazing capability of taking on great shapes, strength and forms when wet felted. The process is simple - using wool roving or batting, resists, water, soap and your patient agitation, we will create seamless wool forms. Mittens to teapot covers, wallets to pillows....the creative opportunities are endless! To begin the course, students will learn the basics of this traditional felting technique by doing a small project, and then each student will plan and engage their own mitten project (or a similarly sized personal project).

Felted wool mittens inspire a vision of a Maine fisherman wearing woolies while working in wet cold conditions. Both are warm, tough and beautiful. In this workshop we will create knitless forms using ancient techniques. By inserting a “resist” into the wool and thus creating a cavity as it is felted, we will make seamless forms shrunk and sculpted to fit your particular needs. Come with a spirit of patient perseverance and be ready to sweat a little as you do the work of shrinking wool like a washing machine!
