Course Overview

In 1842, Anna Atkins used the cyanotype process to make the first book illustrated by photographic images. Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions was a beautiful collection of rich blue images and hand-lettered text that she made by placing specimens on coated paper that she exposed to the sun. In this class we will combine elements of photography and the book arts to construct two folio albums of prints that include natural materials we gather on a hike. You will learn about the simple chemistry behind this iron-based process, how to coat and prepare surfaces, and how to experiment with exposure and development. Come explore the handmade side of photography! No camera is required for this class. Students age 16+ may register for this class. Students will be walking outside to gather specimens nearby and will encounter uneven ground.

Required Tools

  • We will spend time out on a hike to gather materials for our prints, so please have appropriate footwear and protection from inclement weather and bugs, and bring a tote bag for gathered materials.

Optional Tools

  • Due to space limitations, most of our prints will be 8” x 10” or smaller, but please consider bringing interesting objects and materials from home that you would like to print. These can include things like yarn, nuts and bolts, bobbins, carving tools, jewelry, lace, pressed flowers and leaves from your garden, and washed light-colored natural fiber fabric (including printed fabric).
