Work Study, Scholarships and Local Discount

North House Folk School’s mission is rooted in people. Our warm welcome, open-to-all programs, egalitarian engagement, and multi-generational commitment seek to build a community of respect, individuality, and appreciation.

We believe that craft education should be accessible to anyone with an interest in learning, and that the mission of our school is made richer by welcoming a diverse range of students to our campus.

To that end, our organizational values have guided the creation of three key efforts to create greater access to our programs:

  • Work Study Program
  • Scholarship Program
  • Local Discount

Anyone with an interest in learning craft and joining the North House community is encouraged to choose the option that is best suited to their needs: we hope to see you on campus soon!

The Scholarship and Work Study Programs are made possible through the generous support of North House members - add your support to these programs and the overall work of the school by making a gift today!

Work Study

The work study program offers an opportunity of deepened campus involvement to those with limited financial means. Participants earn credit towards tuition in exchange for work on campus. North House offers two varieties of work study: extended residency sessions (for anyone near to far) and weekly drop-in (for year round or seasonal neighbors). Participants in both types earn an hour of course credit for each hour worked.

Scholarships

The North House Folk School Scholarship fund has been made available through the donations of generous supporters who want to make courses available to all. While anyone with financial need is welcome to apply, the goals of the scholarship program are as follows: to increase the diversity of age and race in our student body, to offer opportunities to local residents of Cook County and Grand Portage, MN, to support the learning of those with professional aspirations in a particular craft area, and to make our programming available to those with financial need.

Local Discount

We love to see our neighbors on campus! A local discount of 25% on tuition is available to full time residents of Cook County, as shown on MN Driver's License or State ID. To receive the local discount, you will need to register by calling 218-387-9762. Please note the discount does not apply to materials fees.

For classes where the tuition exceeds $800, the discount will be limited to $200.
