Course Overview

This course takes us back to a time when the building process was mostly human powered. Starting with a stack of freshly cut logs we will use a combination of felling axes and broad axes to make square timbers. For the smaller scantlings (smaller cross-sectioned timbers) we will re-saw some timbers using a two-person pit saw. During the second part of the course, students will use traditional layout methods and techniques to work with hand-hewn timbers. Hand tools are most suited to cut the joinery in this environment, and students will have an opportunity to try out axes, chisels, and beam drills. The result will be a 12’ by 12’ square pavilion with magnificent tool marks showing off its truly hand-crafted nature. Note, this is a physically intensive class. Approximately half of our time will be spent processing materials using hand tools. This will make for consecutive days of physical repetition. Moderate physical fitness is highly recommended.
