Braided-In Rug

Course Overview

Nothing says “country” more than a braided rug.  Making a braided rug that requires no sewing once the braiding is done makes this technique even more attractive.  It is also a great way to recycle, reuse and repurpose old T-shirts, sheets, or other linens, cottons, cloth, or clothing which are no longer being used.  In this class, students will learn how to get started and practice making a few rows of braids in their rug. No need to precut fabric strips. This will be done in class.  If stretchy fabrics are used, students should bring scissors or cutting tools of their choice. Students will finish their rug outside of class time. A $5 materials fee will be collected by instructor in class.

Required Tools

  • Fabric such as T-shirts, cotton or poly/cotton blend bed sheets or fabric and scissors for cutting fabric strips. It is best to use all stretchy cloth, or all cotton or poly/cotton cloth - not some of each - in your rug because they shrink at different rates when washed.  It takes approximately 3-4 lbs. of fabric to make a 2’x3’ rug. Also, scissors and/or cutting tools such as rotary cutter (see above) and 4 (four) very large safety pins (2-3”).

Optional Tools

  • Note taking materials and any other tools you feel may be useful
