Gifts of the Porcupine: A Quillwork Intensive

Course Overview

Using porcupine quills, students will learn to sew them onto home tanned hide. This class is not designed for a finished product. It is about having fun, visiting and exploring the porcupine quill itself. This two-day intensive is designed to honor the porcupine. Porcupine quills have been used by Anishinaabeg and many other Indigenous nations as a traditional material to create. Quill harvest, creating color, and use of leather will be discussed and practiced to give a full, start to finish learning experience.

We will be sitting down for this activity. We will be doing hand sewing. Hand eye coordination is necessary for threading a needle. Previous sewing experience is great but not necessary.

Youth ages 16 and up may attend if accompanied by an adult.
